“No salespeople or engineers can save you in the long run if your customers don’t like your product”

When the founders laying off staff and cutting costs to weather the downturn may seem like a strange thing to tell startups to take their product as seriously as they used to. Do users really care about a product during a recession? Yes, he says Mighty capitalwhose portfolio includes companies such as Airbnb and Amplitude.

The San Francisco-based venture capital firm has a core thesis: the best product wins. And changing the conditions of a macro does not invalidate it. In contrast, the founding managing partner of Mighty Capital, SC Moatti, told TechCrunch that it is “perhaps more relevant now than ever.”

S.K. Moatti is a former Facebook executive with a passion for all things product. In addition to her role at Mighty Capital, she is also the founder and CEO of Products that matteran extensive network of product managers who tout the benefits of product-driven growth.

Product-driven growth makes sense during an economic downturn: If the product itself is doing the hard work, it means there’s potentially a lot less to spend on sales and marketing. This makes it more likely that successful product-focused companies will grow quickly and turn a profit, which is what investors like to hear these days.

However, there is one catch: you cannot manage a product without a great product. However, entrepreneurs are understandably nervous about the investment it will take when their burn rate keeps them awake at night anyway.

To understand how S.S. Moatti thinks about the product versus cost conundrum, we asked her a series of questions that founders might have if they are thinking about taking the product-based leap. Her responses follow, edited for length and clarity.
