Naomi Osaka forced out of Tokyo title defense due to abdominal pain

Naomi Osaka’s title defense at her home at the Pan Pacific Open ended on Thursday when the former world number one pulled out before her second-round match against Beatriz Haddad Maia due to abdominal pain.

“I’m so sorry I can’t compete today,” said the four-time Grand Slam champion, who won the tournament when it was last held in 2019 in her hometown of Osaka.

“It is an honor to be able to play at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in front of amazing fans here in Japan. This was and always will be a special tournament for me and I wish I had stepped onto the court today, but my body won’t let me.”

It was the latest setback for the 24-year-old, who sat out the entire grass season with an Achilles tendon injury and also retired from her first-round match in Toronto with a back problem in preparation for the game. US Open.

Osaka made it to the second round after her own first-round opponent, Daria Saville, retired injured only in the second game of the match.

Brazilian Haddad Maia will face fourth seed Veronika Kudermetova or Mexican Fernanda Contreras Gomez in the quarterfinals.
