Rutgers vs. Ohio State Preview

Week 5 sees the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Ohio State Buckeyes Scarlet Knights face an uphill battle as the dominant Buckeyes are favored by almost six touchdowns.

In his pre-game press conference (via 247 Sports), Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano said that while last week’s opponent Iowa can be considered at a certain level, Ohio State is at a completely different level.

“[I]f Iowa is 1-A, Ohio is 1, they are third, second in the nation for whatever reason. As Steve said, I was there, I understand the culture, I understand the program and I understand the level of talent. In order for us to have the opportunity to win this game, we must be consistent, we must constantly be on top. I just finished telling you that this is the last thing to come. But you know what, the challenge is great and that’s what I like about this league, so I’m looking forward to it,” said Schiano.

He added: “If we play well, that will be a great yardstick. But if you play poorly against a team like Ohio State, it really comes out, right. If you play poorly against a good team, you may not look very good. You play badly against them, and the question is how many of them, what difference does it make. So we need to go out and play our best game and then some things will go your way, and again, the game is what you need to do. You need to hold on there, you need to play hard and you keep looking up and you still have a chance and then you keep going and it gets harder and harder and that’s what you do when you’re the underdog of the market and this is where we are now.”

Siano also addressed the injuries his quarterbacks have been battling with this year and said that of course they want to win, but he won’t risk the health of his players.

“I will never risk my health, I don’t care who we play with. Their health always comes first for me. We’re going to win the game. This is what we do. We’re going to Columbus to win the game. It will happen? You know there’s another team on the opposite side that wants the same thing. Therefore, in my opinion, goals are overrated. We both have the same goal at the beginning of many games. But we’re going to do our best, we’re going to train, prepare, go to Columbus and play our best,” the Rutgers coach said.

Rutgers in Ohio starts Saturday, October 1 at 3:30 pm ET on the Big Ten Network.
