The presidents of Iran and Azerbaijan held a telephone conversation, during which Masoud Pezeshkian informed Ilham Aliyev that the “bombing incident” in Nakhichevan “has nothing to do” with the Islamic Republic, the press service of the Azerbaijani president reported.
Pezeshkyan Aliyev promised to investigate the incident.
He also thanked Iranian President Ilham Aliyev for his condolences on the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and his determination to provide humanitarian assistance to civilians.
According to his press office, Aliyev “once again offered his condolences for the death of a large number of civilians” in Iran.
On March 5, two Iranian drones crashed in Azerbaijan: one on the territory of Nakhichevan Airport, and the other near a school in the village of Shukrabad. The incident resulted in two civilians being injured. The Iranian ambassador was summoned to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The airspace in the south of the country was closed, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev described the attack by Iranian drones as a terrorist attack. The next day, the head of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry announced that Azerbaijani diplomatic staff would be completely withdrawn from the embassy in Tehran and the country’s consulate general in Tabriz.
