Early Monday morning, a Tesla Megapack battery caught fire at a key energy storage facility in California, the state’s largest energy company said in a statement to TechCrunch.

According to PG&E, the utility “became aware of a fire in one Tesla Megapack at its Elkhorn battery storage facility around 1:30 AM in Moss Landing, which is located about 25 miles south of Santa Cruz, in Monterey County. The site hosts a facility that holds 256 megapacks and is capable of storing up to 730 megawatt hours of energy… when not lit. Such facilities are at the heart of an important transition to renewable energy, storing clean energy for use when the sun is out.

At the time of this story’s publication, the facility had been taken offline as firefighters were working to “stop the fire from spreading and provide a safe area for emergency personnel.” Fire block a section of highway 1 and called Onsite asylum advice from the county sheriff’s office. The office alerted nearby residents to the “ongoing hazardous materials incident” around 9:00 a.m., stating, “Please close windows and turn off ventilation systems.”

PG&E said in a statement that its safety systems “worked as intended when the problem was discovered” and there were no injuries. The utility added that the incident did not result in “power outages for customers at this time.”

When asked about the extent of the fire, a spokesman for the utility declined to provide further details.

Although unrelated to Tesla, the lithium batteries in warehouses at Moss Landing repeatedly caught fire in recent years. And last year Tesla Megapack caught fire in Geelong, Australia during initial testing for Victorian big battery storage.
