Khalid Zadran, a spokesman for Kabul’s police chief, told CNN that the blast resulted in casualties but did not elaborate.

The incident occurred in the 17th police station of the city, security forces are working on the spot, he added.

The health organization Emergency said at least three people had died.

“After today’s explosion, we have admitted 27 patients to our Surgical Center for War Victims in Kabul, including five minors, one of them a 7-year-old boy,” Stefano Sozza, director of emergency services in Afghanistan, told CNN.

“Two patients arrived dead, one died in the emergency room,” he said.

“In August alone, we dealt with six mass wounds in our hospital, with a total of almost 80 patients. During the year, we continued to receive daily gunshot, shrapnel and stab wounds, victims of mines and IED explosions. The country is suffering from the consequences of a very long conflict that has undermined its future,” he added.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid confirmed that there were civilians killed and wounded, but did not say how many. He tweeted that the Taliban government “strongly condemns” the explosion and vowed that those responsible for “such crimes will be caught and punished for their heinous deeds.”

Another deputy Taliban spokesman, Bilal Karimi, condemned the explosion in a tweet Wednesday evening.

“Killers of civilians and those who have committed similar crimes will soon be caught and punished for their actions, God willing,” wrote Karimi.

Brent Swales and Johnny Hallam of CNN contributed to the story.
