President’s Day History

After George Washington’s death in 1799, his birthday became an unofficial memorial day known as Washington Day. People throughout the 1800s remember this day to remember the man who created America and the legacy he left behind. The relocation and burial of the remains of George Washington in the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., was approved by a resolution of 1832. The completion of the Washington Monument in 1848 sparked even larger celebrations across the country.

Because of Abraham Lincoln’s legacy and his birthday on February 12, Washington Day was renamed President’s Day in honor of both, but Congress rejected that notion. Steven Wallace Dorsey did not propose to make Washington’s birthday a national government holiday until the late 1870s. It was founded by Rutherford B. Hayes in 1879, and was added in 1870 during the four bank holidays.
