The Review-Journal plans to donate $50,000 to two nonprofits in honor of slain investigative journalist Jeff Herman, the company said Wednesday.

The paper donated $25,000 to the Three Square Food Bank and $25,000 to the Jeff Herman Investigative Reporting Fund, which focuses on investigative reporting and editors.

Herman, 69, was stabbed to death on September 2 near his home in northwest Las Vegas. He has written about corruption, crime, and the courts in Las Vegas for four decades. Robert Telles, a Clark County elected official who was the focus of Herman’s series of articles, was arrested September 7 in connection with the murder and charged with murdering an elderly man with a deadly weapon.

“On behalf of Jeff Herman, we are making these donations in memory of our friend and colleague,” said Keith Moyer, Review-Journal publisher and editor. “At the request of Jeff’s family, we are contributing to Three Square, a wonderful food bank in Southern Nevada that helps many in need. And we are supported by the creation of a national Jeff training fund by investigative journalists and editors, and we are donating seed money to this good cause.”

Herman’s family has created a donation portal called Three Square for those who wish to donate in his memory. Brian Burton, president and CEO of the nonprofit, said the Review-Journal donation and nearly 200 others received to date will provide an additional 134,118 meals to food insecure residents of the valley.

“All of us at Three Square Food Bank offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Las Vegas reporter Jeff Herman, and to all those he served through his gallant investigative reporting,” Burton said in a statement. “At the request of Jeff’s family, a fundraising campaign was created in his honor to help hundreds of thousands of southern Nevadas who are fighting hunger, celebrating his dedication to our community and legacy of seeking justice for others.”

Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Herman can find the link here. There are six options, from monthly groceries for a family of four to healthy meals for the elderly.

The IRE established the Herman Foundation to train journalists in investigative journalism. Herman was an early member of the professional organization, attending a conference in San Diego in 1981, and was an active member at the time of his death, the organization said in a statement.

“Jeff Herman has dedicated his professional life to investigating people in power and exposing corruption, ensuring that people in his community are well informed about what their officials are doing and how their taxes are being spent — or wasted,” said the chief executive. IRE Diana Fuentes. . “He is a role model for journalists at all stages of their careers. Journalism is the backbone of democracy, and the IRE is committed to ensuring that investigative journalism continues. The Foundation will help achieve this goal.”

The foundation accepts donations on the organization’s website, as well as through Venmo, Facebook and PayPal. The organization asks those who donate to write “The Jeff Herman Foundation” in the message or tribute line. To date, the foundation has reached $5,000 in donations and there is no deadline for contributions.
