Robert Mueller, who served as special counsel in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US elections, has died at the age of 81. Mueller’s family announced his death on March 21, demanding that his privacy be respected.
CNN reports that in August 2025, Mueller’s family informed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease several years earlier.
Mueller served as head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from 2001 to 2013. In 2017, the US Department of Justice appointed him as a special prosecutor in the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, which Donald Trump won.
The investigation lasted two years. Mueller ultimately concluded that Russia interfered in the election but did not collude with Donald Trump and his campaign.
Donald Trump comments on the death of the special investigator in the election interference case books On his social network Truth: “Robert Mueller just died. Well, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”
