The well-being of the younger generation directly depends on the quality of life and health of our children. And one of the most important factors in maintaining health and strengthening the growing body is a healthy and varied diet. A balanced diet is the basis of harmonious development, a full and long life, the main protection against many dangerous diseases. That is why it is so important that the child learns the right eating habits as early as possible.

“It is important to instill a culture of good nutrition from a young age. Children do not always form the correct stereotypes and habits regarding food, so educational work in this area is extremely important. This is one of the tasks of the Rospotrebnadzor project “Healthy food”, carried out within the framework of the national project “Demography”. Children need to understand what they eat, how different foods affect the body, why the diet should be varied and balanced and how to do it, know the basic rules of a healthy diet in order to apply them in life in the future.– notes Ekaterina Golovkova, official representative of Rospotrebnadzor, deputy head of the Center for Hygienic Education of the Population, information curator of the Healthy Food project.

Healthy nutrition should not only provide the child with all the necessary nutrients and energy in the optimal amount, but should also contribute to health promotion and disease prevention.

The Healthy Eating project reminds you of the basic rules of infant nutrition:

1. The amount of energy provided by food should match energy expenditure, and the nutrient content should match the physiological needs of the body.

2. All major food groups should be present in the diet to ensure its diversity, the diet should be balanced in the composition of proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

3. It is important to follow the right diet (three main meals, preferably at the same time, and several snacks). Also, we should not forget about the drinking regimen (you need to drink regularly throughout the day, plain water is better).

4. Cooking methods should contribute to the maximum preservation of the nutritional value of the original products.

5. It is desirable to include in the diet specialized foods, which are distinguished by control over the content of fats, salt and easily digestible sugars. In addition, such products can be enriched with vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and biologically active ingredients.

6. It is important to take into account the individual characteristics of the child and instill in him a culture of healthy eating.

“Studies show that today up to 40% of primary school children and about 1/3 of older teenagers are overweight. The problem, of course, is rooted in childhood, in the family, where the child must learn the rules of healthy eating. He must understand that food is necessary for his health. But not only – the diet also affects academic performance. It has been proven that without enough protein or iron, it is more difficult for a child to study well.” – comments President of the Union of Pediatricians of Russia, Chief Freelance Pediatric Specialist in Preventive Medicine of the Ministry of Health of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Leila Namazova-Baranova.

In Russia, Rospotrebnadzor fulfills an important social task in promoting the principles of healthy nutrition. To this end, the federal project “Strengthening public health” was developed in 2019 within the framework of the national project “Demography”.

There is extensive work with both the adult population and the youth. One of the important activities of the department is to set up a system for monitoring the nutritional status of children and young people. In 2019, research was started in five pilot regions and tested at 2,800 schools. In 2020, the study of school nutrition has expanded and covers 24 regions of the Russian Federation. In the period from 2019 to 2021, a nutritional study was conducted among students of 5562 educational organizations, a study among 92,900 students of primary, middle and secondary schools together with their parents. In 2021, monitoring has been carried out in 49 regions of the Russian Federation, in 2022 65 regions have already been investigated.

In Russia, all primary school students receive hot meals at the expense of the state. To ensure quality, Rospotrebnadzor conducts unscheduled inspections at relevant educational organizations and their food suppliers.

Also released “Recommendations on catering for students of educational institutions”, regulating hot meal standards in schools and methodological recommendations “Parental control on the organization of hot meals for children in educational institutions”helping parents of schoolchildren assess the quality of food services provided.

Forming an environment conducive to raising young people’s awareness of the basic principles of healthy eating is one of the important areas of work of Rospotrebnadzor. During the educational work, various educational projects for children were implemented: television and radio programs, animated series, educational programs, exhibitions, open classes and much more.

Therefore, in 2020, together with the publishing house Prosveshchenie, the Ministry of Education and the ANO National Priorities, open lessons for children on the basics of healthy eating were developed. The materials are placed on the platform of the Library of Educational Materials of the Moscow Electronic School (MES). Any teacher can download and teach an open lesson on the basics of healthy eating. The aim of the lessons is to help schoolchildren understand the principles of proper nutrition and the importance of a responsible attitude towards one’s nutrition as an integral part of a healthy lifestyle. In 2022, the educational project “Safety Lesson” was launched, aimed at the younger generation. Experts from the Healthy Eating Project and the Enlightenment Group of Companies participated in the preparation.

Since 2021, a large-scale cooperative project has been carried out together with the Orlyonok All-Russian Children’s Center. Rospotrebnadzor, Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution “Federal Research Center of Nutrition and Biotechnology” and All-Russian Center “Orlyonok” have developed a series of children’s educational pilot programs “Fundamentals of Healthy Nutrition”, which include educational lectures, culinary master classes, the festival competition “National Cuisine of Russia”, educational internships with the opportunity to study the rules for compiling a healthy diet and choosing high-quality and safe products, as well as meetings with ambassadors and project experts. More than 50,000 children from all over Russia have already been trained under the program, the total audience reach exceeds 1 million.

In addition, together with the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company and the Karusel children’s TV channel, Rospotrebnadzor has prepared several cycles of educational cartoons about proper nutrition. These are funny videos for the little ones, which present the basic principles of making a healthy diet for children in an accessible way. Also on the “Children’s Radio” a series of programs “Self-assembly Tablecloth” dedicated to healthy nutrition is regularly broadcast. Experts from the Center for Hygiene Education of the Population of Rospotrebnadzor created an animated educational series on the topic of healthy eating for teenagers “Vanya and Gosha” (24 episodes).

Portal created and developed in 2019 healthy-food.rfwhere everyone can find the most up-to-date, scientifically verified information about a healthy lifestyle. New section opened in 2022 “ABC of Healthy Eating”. This is a comprehensive entertainment and educational online resource for children of different age groups (preschoolers, schoolchildren, high school/teenagers) and their parents with verified information about healthy eating and the basic rules, presented in an accessible, playful, interactive format and collected according to the principle of “learning through play”.
