Brazil’s decision not to start Bruno Guimaraes in their FIFA World Cup Group G clash with Serbia on 24 November was met with bewilderment by fans.

The Newcastle United midfielder has been a revelation since joining St James’ Park from Olympique Lyonnais in January for €42.1m.

Guimaraes has made 14 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring three goals and providing two assists.

He won eight international caps for Brazil, scoring one goal, and many expected him to start at the FIFA World Cup.

However, Seleçao Boss Tite opted to start Guimaraes on the bench, with West Ham United’s Lucas Paqueta chosen to partner Manchester United’s Casemiro in midfield.

It’s a solid formation for the nation, which many believe are the favorites to win the tournament in Qatar.

Alisson Becker starts in goal, with Danilo, Marquinhos, Thiago Silva and Alex Sandro in defence.

As mentioned, Casemiro and Paqueta are in midfield and sit behind a scintillating attack.

The in-form Neymar, who has scored 15 goals and 12 assists in 20 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain, is given a free-roaming role.

He also captains the team and is behind an attack consisting of Raphinha, Richarlison and Vinicius Junior.

All eyes will be on Tite’s midfield performance, with many believing Guimaraes deserved to start.

Here are some fan reactions on Twitter to the Newcastle midfielder’s omission:

Brazil legend and FIFA World Cup winner captain Cafu predicts Seleçao win the tournament

Cafu, who captained the South Americans at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, has given his prediction for this year’s campaign.

The AC Milan icon believes Tite’s men will triumph in Qatar as their side are the strongest since 2002.

He said (via the Daily Mail):

“I think Brazil will win this year. It’s the strongest group of players since 2002 and the team doesn’t rely too much on Neymar like in the past. Brazil are strong in all areas: defence, midfield and attack.”

It’s been 20 years since Seleçao won the FIFA World Cup for the last time, and Cafu insists it’s time for it to end this time around:

“Twenty years without winning a World Cup or even appearing in a final is too much for Brazil. I think it will end in Qatar.”

The legendary right-back touched on other potential favourites, such as Argentina and defending champions France.

However, he feels his nation are ahead of all other teams:

“Brazil are ahead of all the other teams. But I think Argentina are very strong too. They are playing well and Lionel Messi is a genius. France have the same team that won four years ago. This are the three favourites.”
