Spanish prosecutors seek 8 years in prison for Shakira

MADRID, 29 July (Reuters). A Spanish prosecutor is seeking an eight-year prison sentence in the 14.5m-euro tax fraud case for Colombian superstar Shakira, according to a prosecutor’s document released Friday.

The singer, who has sold more than 80 million records worldwide with hits like “Hips Don’t Lie,” turned down a prosecutor’s offer to close the case earlier this week.

According to Shakira, she is accused of tax evasion between 2012 and 2014, when she did not live in Spain.

When asked for comment, Shakira’s representatives cited a previous statement sent on Wednesday that said Shakira was “completely confident of her innocence” and considered the case a “total violation of her rights”.

The terms of the previous settlement offer were not disclosed.

The 45-year-old singer, who is known as the queen of Latin pop, said she initially paid the 17.2m euros she claimed to be owed by the Spanish tax office and claimed she had no outstanding taxes.
