What happened?

Telegram will be completely blocked in Russia. This means it’s time for you to get a VPN. We are sure: if you are in the Russian Federation, you must have a VPN on your phone and computer. It’s as important and simple as brushing your teeth.

This material answers the main questions about VPNs as clearly as possible. You can understand how this technology works yourself – and help friends and family install a VPN. Why is this necessary? Independent information helps you survive.

If you are not in Russia, create a magic link or pdf (links at the end of the material) and send it to your friends who do not have a VPN yet.

This is the technology to bypass blocking. There are other types of overtaking, but this is the main type.

By running a VPN, you connect to an intermediary server – usually in another country. This service then connects to the requested site. Roskomnadzor or service providers (companies that provide you with the Internet) only see the intermediary.

This is a service that provides you with a safer Internet by further encrypting the connection. In principle, you do not need to know more about VPNs.

Naturally, the Russian authorities are trying to fight VPNs. Sometimes even successfully. But VPN makers are quickly adapting. But VPN is unlikely to be completely blocked: it is critical for many companies (for example, banks).

VPNs have long been a technology not intended for advanced users. VPN at least once Included Almost half of Russian users.

If you want to get your Telegram back (and at the same time Instagram, YouTube and any other service), you need a VPN.

How to install and start using VPN? Which VPN should I download?

Roskomnadzor is constantly fighting against VPNs, and not all of these services work well in Russia (unfortunately). Even some popular foreign VPNs can’t handle the blocking. Therefore, it is better to download a VPN based on recommendations. And you have 1-2 replacement services in stock.

If you have an iPhone, the Russian App Store may not have the VPN you need: Apple removed several services from there at the request of the authorities in 2024. VPN makers are aware of this issue and usually provide instructions on how to download an alternative app.

In this article we recommend three different VPN services (this is not an ad). All of these services support payment in rubles from a Russian card.

  • project amnesia (here mirrorif the site does not open). Amnezia has its own protocol (which is good) and also has a free app. It has a replacement app for iOS, which has not yet been removed from the App Store (here directions upon installation).
  • Second recommendation – PaperVPN. The iOS app isn’t available in the regular App Store, but you can install an alternative app (here). directions).
  • Third – Hide my name. This service provides free trial access for 24 hours. There are also instructions on how to install the app for iOS. The developers claim that their VPN works in Russia with any telecom operators.

There are many other services worth appreciating. If you do not like any of the above three, we advise you to study the reviews on the sites VPN love and “Star in Touch”.

Now about the installation. It’s usually very simple. Go to the VPN page or app store (if you need an alternative, follow the instructions on the VPN website). Download the app for your device. Sign up (you may need an email), and pay for the VPN for the required period. After that, they will email you a private key: you enter it in the settings, select the country from which you now want to access blocked sites (more on this below), and connect. Sometimes everything works even without a key – immediately after payment.

It’s easier to use: launch the app. You will be convinced that the VPN is working when you open (for example) Telegram.

Don’t forget to update the app.

I don’t want a paid VPN. I want free. How can I install it?

We strongly recommend that you do not use unfamiliar free VPNs. A simple principle applies here: if you don’t pay for the product, you are the product.

Free VPNs often make money through spy After users or resell their data. There was a case when there was a popular extension to bypass the ban Take screenshots From user screens. research displaysThat free VPNs often transfer data to Russian servers (!).

If you don’t want your data to end up in the hands of Russian security forces, it’s better not to risk it and use paid VPNs. Your free internet access and security are worth the money. Moreover, in most cases, VPN can be paid using a Russian card.

No, some offer limited free versions in the hope that you’ll upgrade to a paid plan. There are VPNs that exist thanks to volunteers, and their complex setup makes them unpopular. If you want to try the free option, try e.g. Jeff. But our general recommendation remains the same: install a paid service.

You have installed a VPN, but now some websites and apps are not working. How to fix this?

When you use a VPN, you seem to turn into a user of another country – perhaps, from the point of view of the Russian authorities, “unfriendly”. This does not increase your risk in any way, but some Russian sites will not open for you.

Within a VPN, you can change the country you are logging in from. Choose any country that is not part of the European Union. Countries in the Middle East and Asia are doing well – or Albania, for example.

Additionally, some apps and sites realize that you have a VPN (which is also secure) and ask you to turn it off. This is how Russian banks sometimes behave. In this case, the easiest way is to turn off the VPN for a while.

6

Is VPN illegal? Can I be fined or imprisoned?

No, using a VPN is not prohibited in Russia. Only advertising of VPNs that bypass the block is prohibited. In addition, the use of a VPN is an aggravating circumstance when committing crimes (such as being drunk for example). But VPN is a completely legal technology.

Russian authorities are fighting VPNs themselves, not their users. For example, in February, Roskomnadzor announced that it had restricted access to 469 VPN services. But while some services are blocked, others appear.

7

This means that not all VPNs will be blocked?

Probably not, although Roskomnadzor is tightening restrictions. The agency is now trying to identify the protocol through which data is transferred and block it, rather than individual servers. This allows you to quickly disable “enemy services”. Services are fighting back and finding ways to counter the ban.

But it is unlikely that the authorities will decide to ban VPNs completely. This technology is important for businesses and other organizations. Therefore, new protocols will always emerge to provide the necessary security.

But the authorities, of course, will not encourage the use of VPNs. For example, MAX messenger (which we strongly advise you not to use) looks at whether a user has a VPN enabled, whether certain blocked websites can be accessed, and sends this information to its servers. This appears to allow the government to collect statistics about VPN usage.

Is there some kind of indestructible VPN that will definitely not be blocked?

Unfortunately no. And Roskomnadzor itself, by blocking any protocol, immediately disables all VPNs that use it. Be prepared that the VPN you choose may need to change at some point. That’s why it’s so important to have a spare on hand.

But usually the service developers themselves introduce new servers and change the protocols. Therefore, you need to update the VPN app on both your phone and computer.

You can also create your own VPN. It is cheaper, the probability of it being blocked in this case is much lower, and you can connect any number of devices to it – but all this requires certain technical skills.

And remember: Most likely, you will need a foreign bank card to pay for renting a broker’s server abroad. If you are confident, start with instructions such as this. If not, ask your friends. There are a very large number of VPN users in Russia, and someone must surely have experience in setting up such servers.
