The Bundestag wants to recognize the Holodomor as genocide – DW – 25.11.2022

A number of parliamentary groups in the German Bundestag are working on a draft resolution in which Holodomor Recognized in 1930 genocide. The Social Democrats, the Greens, the Free Democrats and the CDU/CSU bloc of Christian parties are involved in the creation of the joint text, the German media reported on Friday, November 25, citing a copy of the document.

According to reports, the text of the resolution is planned to be drafted for the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holodomor, which is always celebrated on the last Saturday of November in Ukraine. As a result of the forced collectivization of agriculture in the USSR, carried out in the regnal year Joseph Stalin, in 1932-1933, a massive famine broke out in the country, killing millions of people. From the point of view of Ukraine, this catastrophe was deliberately provoked by the leadership of the Soviet Union.

Holodomor as genocide

“The Holodomor is one of the misanthropic crimes of totalitarian systems that destroyed millions of people in Europe in the first half of the 20th century. The whole Ukraine, and not just the grain regions. From today’s perspective, this must be qualified historically and politically as genocide’, states the draft resolution of the Bundestag.

The Holodomor has long been a major controversial topic between Ukraine and Russia. Moscow rejects Kiev’s view that only Ukrainians were victims of mass starvation, arguing that hungry Millions of people in Central Asia and Russia have also been affected.
