The annual Ig Nobel Prize, which honors discoveries that “make people laugh,” will be held in Europe for the first time. About this I mentioned The Associated Press refers to the award’s organizers, the Annals of Improbable Research.
This decision comes against the backdrop of tightening immigration policies by US President Donald Trump.
“Over the past year, it has become unsafe for our guests to visit the country,” Mark Abrahams, the magazine’s editor-in-chief and master of ceremonies, told the agency. “We cannot ask honorees or international journalists covering the event to come to the United States this year.”
Typically, award ceremonies are held in September — a few weeks before the Nobel Prize winners are announced — at Harvard, MIT, and Boston University. However, last year, four of the ten winners decided not to go to the ceremony in Boston.
Now the award ceremony will be held in Zurich and other European cities.
