Yedioth Ahronoth reported, citing sources, on April 12 that IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir had ordered preparations for a possible resumption of hostilities against Iran in the near future and was placed on high alert.
The Chief of General Staff issued this order after the failure of negotiations between the United States and Iran to end the war, which were held in Islamabad on April 11 and 12.
Military sources said that the Israeli army has developed a simplified combat protocol similar to the one that was used during the war with Iran in 2025 and 2026. At the same time, the Army accelerated processes related to planning and operational activities.
The publication adds that all branches of the IDF have been tasked with maintaining high combat readiness, reducing response times and filling operational gaps.
On the night of April 8, the United States and Iran concluded an agreement on a two-week ceasefire, as well as the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran had closed since the beginning of the war. On the first day of the temporary truce, Iran opened the passage to four ships, but closed the strait again after Israel attacked Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The negotiations between the United States and Iran took place on April 11 and 12 in Pakistan, and lasted, according to both parties, from 21 to 25 hours. As US President Donald Trump said, the two sides could not agree on the nuclear issue. In addition, the United States and Iran have reached an impasse over the Strait of Hormuz. Afterwards, Trump announced that the Navy had begun a blockade of the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz is of strategic importance because a fifth of seaborne oil supplies passed through it before the war.
