On March 15, the 98th Academy Awards ceremony was held in Los Angeles. The best film (as expected) was Paul Thomas Anderson’s Battle After Battle. The American director, who has never won an Oscar, also won awards for Best Screenplay and Adapted Director. In total, the film won six awards during the evening. Its main rival, Ryan Coogler’s horror film “The Sinners,” which holds the record for the most Oscar nominations, took home four statues out of a possible 16. The third to receive an award is “Frankenstein” by Guillermo del Toro (three Oscars – for costumes, make-up and set design).
In the acting categories, Timothée Chalamet was the favorite this year for Marty the Great, but Michael B. Jordan won the award for The Sinners, also beating out Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, and Wagner Moura. As expected, Jessie Buckley (“Hamnet”) won Best Actress. The winners for supporting roles were Amy Madigan (Aunt Gladys from “Guns” became such a big meme that the entire ceremony started with a parody of her) and Sean Penn (he did not attend the ceremony).
The most politically charged statements came in speeches by Javier Bardem, who called for the liberation of Palestine, and Pavel Talankin, co-author of David Borenstein, who created the document “Mr. Nobody Against Putin”; A videographer from the city of Karabash referred to the war between Russia and Ukraine, and called for an end to all wars. Animation director Konstantin Bronzet, who was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film (“The Three Sisters”), did not receive an award for the third time in his career.
This year’s ceremony was hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien – and his performance wasn’t the most memorable (his sharpest joke is: “For the first time since 2012, there are no British actors in the nominations. But at least they’re catching pedophiles!”). Jimmy Kimmel, who presented the statuette for Best Documentary, in turn, opening the envelope, said: “Imagine how angry he will be when he finds out that the name in the envelope is not the name of his wife” (this is a joke about the documentary “Melania”, which was not submitted in the nomination).
The first woman to win an Oscar for cinematography was Autumn Dorald Arcabaw, who directed The Sinners. This year also, for the first time, they presented a statuette for the best cast – it went to Cassandra Koulocondis, “Battle After Battle”.
