The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation has rejected the claim prepared by a group of eco-activists against the climate policy of the Russian authorities. Relevant information is on the court’s website on Thursday 22 Sept.

joint action On September 13, the Moscow Helsinki Group, the Ecodefence!-Women’s Council movement and 18 Russian citizens submitted their application. The plaintiffs planned to challenge the decree of the President of Russia “On the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions” and the Russian Federation’s social and economic development strategy with low greenhouse gas emissions until 2050. As noted in the statement, Russia’s climate strategy anticipates an increase in greenhouse gas emissions until at least 2030, while the Russian Federation must reduce emissions under the Paris Agreement. At the same time, an increase in greenhouse gas emissions violates Russians’ fundamental rights, including the right to life and the right to health care, the lawsuit alleges.

The plaintiffs’ representative, Grigory Vaypan, told Kedr.media that in case of refusal, the activists plan to go to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). Since the lawsuit was filed on September 13 – that is, three days before the Russian Federation ceased to be a party European Convention on Human Rights, – the ECtHR can consider the claim if it is rejected by the Russian court.
