Nine Mediterranean countries sent an urgent appeal to the European Commission, warning of the serious danger posed by the Russian tanker Arctic Metagas. A ship carrying liquefied natural gas has now drifted in the Mediterranean after being attacked by Ukraine. This was reported by the agency on Monday, March 16 Reuters.
“The precarious position of the vessel, coupled with the nature of the dangerous goods it carries, poses a direct and serious threat of a large-scale environmental catastrophe in the heart of the EU’s seawaters,” the collective letter said.
The incident occurred on March 3 near Malta’s territorial waters. According to representatives of the Russian Ministry of Transport, the Arctic gas tanker Metagaz was attacked by Ukrainian drone boats.
Later, management representative Nikolai Shestakov said that in addition to the two who suffered burns, the rest of the gas tanker’s 28 crew members headed to Murmansk.
The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that the attack on the Arctic Metagaz region is a terrorist attack and a war crime.
