To the 75th anniversary of Carlos Santana: from modest mariachi to rock aristocracy

July 20 marks the 75th anniversary of the birth of Carlos Santana. The Mexican-born American guitarist and composer pioneered the introduction of Latin American rhythms into the mainstream of popular music and is rightfully considered one of the key figures in the development of rock.

Two weeks ago, on Tuesday, July 5, at a concert in Detroit, the then 74-year-old Santana lost consciousness and fell right on the stage. Medics called immediately took him off the stage on a cart to the hospital. True, he woke up pretty quickly and managed to wave his hand to a 15,000-strong crowd frozen in a daze at the Pine Knob outdoor theater in Clarkston, near Detroit.

The very next day, Santana addressed fans on his Facebook page: “Don’t be scared. I just forgot to eat and drink water. I was dehydrated and passed out. Thank you all for your prayers. Cindy and I are fine.”

Cindy Blackman is the wife of a musician who works as a drummer in his band. Santana’s manager added that heatstroke could have been the cause of the collapse. The next day’s concert on Wednesday was also cancelled.

However, all subsequent dates of the two-month Miraculous Supernatural tour, starting on Friday, July 8, have passed and continue to run as scheduled. There are no signs of cancellation and the “Intimate Evening with Santana” residency scheduled for September-November at a Las Vegas club.

Last December, the musician underwent sudden heart surgery, which forced him to cancel a series of concerts in Las Vegas. The details of the operation were not disclosed, but judging by the fact that he returned to concerts in January, it was not very serious.

75 years old is not that old by today’s standards. Paul McCartney, who crossed his ninth decade a month ago, is touring with might and main, and Jagger and Richards, who are approaching their 80th birthday, are jumping around the stage as briskly as they did half a century ago.

However, three-quarters of a century is still more than a respectable age. God grant, as they say, Carlos Santana many more years of active life, but the anniversary is a great occasion to remember this life, rich, bright and fruitful.
