Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that Kiev, through American intermediaries, had conveyed to Moscow a proposal to mutually abandon attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure.
“If Russia is ready to stop attacks on our energy sector, we will be ready to respond in kind,” Zelensky said in a recorded speech on April 6. “And the Russian side has such a proposal on our part, through the Americans.”
He added that the Ukrainian armed forces seek to limit Russia’s ability to benefit from the crisis that arose in the oil sector due to the war between the United States and Israel with Iran.
The President of Ukraine said: “Everything that the Russians can gain from the oil price shock, they will give to the war. This priority has not changed yet. Therefore, every restriction that we place on their ability to export oil is correct.”
Zelensky added that Ukraine had previously proposed to Russia to conclude a truce regarding Easter. “But for them, all times are the same, for them nothing is sacred,” the Ukrainian leader said.
In the winter of 2026, Russia, at the request of US President Donald Trump, temporarily stopped striking Ukrainian energy facilities. The “energy truce” lasted for four days, from January 29 to February 1 inclusive. Meanwhile, Russian armed forces continued to attack civilian targets.
Recently, Ukraine has become more active in striking Russian oil facilities. The port of Ust-Luga in the Leningrad region has become a target of attacks more than once. In Novorossiysk, the largest oil loading terminal in southern Russia was attacked.
