The Brazil team doctor has provided an update on the injury suffered by Neymar Jr. in their 2022 FIFA World Cup opener against Serbia on Thursday, November 24.

The Séléçao won 2-0 in their opener of the Qatar clash thanks to two goals from Richarlison. The Tottenham Hotspur striker put them ahead in the 62nd minute after netting a rebound from a Vinicius Jr shot.

He then scored a superb 73rd-minute bicycle kick to secure Brazil’s three points in their FIFA World Cup opener.

While it was generally a positive day for Tite’s side, their talisman Neymar got injured in the 80th minute. The Paris Saint-Germain man appears to have injured his ankle and the team doctor has provided an update on the matter (via Mirror):

“Neymar has a trauma to his right ankle. Due to the impact he had with the Serbian player’s knee, we immediately started treatment when he was on the bench.

He added:

“With physiotherapy, you have to wait 24 to 48 hours to have a better assessment. We have not planned an MRI and tomorrow we will have a new assessment.

“We have to wait now, we cannot comment prematurely on his condition. He remained on the pitch and played for 11 minutes before being substituted.

The former Barcelona player picked up nine fouls against Serbia. This is the highest number of single-player fouls in a 2022 FIFA World Cup match to date.

◎ Most fouls won in a single match at the 2018 World Cup: Neymar (10 v Switzerland)

Brazil coach Tite on Neymar in his 2022 FIFA World Cup opener against Serbia

The Séléçao Boss Tite claimed that Neymar Jr. suffered throughout the match due to the number of fouls he suffered. However, he continued to play for his team and helped them start their FIFA World Cup campaign on a winning note.

Tite said:

“Neymar felt this pain throughout the match but he decided to stay on the pitch to help his team. It is therefore remarkable that he was able to endure this pain to continue playing for his team.

The PSG forward is just two behind Pele on Brazil’s top scorers list with 75 goals. He hopes to break that record while helping his side win their sixth World Cup trophy in Qatar.

Next, Brazil will face Switzerland on November 28.
