The Los Angeles Rams revealed on Tuesday that they have released linebacker Justin Hollins and running back Darrell Henderson. So why did the Rams release Henderson at this point in the campaign?

Henderson may have secretly asked to be released. With Cam Akers and Kyren Williams also seeing action in the crowded Rams secondary, Henderson can believe he’s starting the quality. He wouldn’t be wrong if he wanted a bigger role and bigger opportunities, especially during a contract year.

The Rams waived RB Darrell Henderson.

The Rams waived RB Darrell Henderson.

The Los Angeles Rams allowed him to play more football with other franchises before becoming a free agent in March by waiving it.

On Twitter, Henderson appeared to respond to reports of his release:

Henderson, a third-round pick in the 2019 draft, leads the club on the ground with 283 yards and three scores. Seven of his 10 appearances have started, including last week’s loss to New Orleans. However, Henderson only participated in four offensive plays during the game.

He was fulfilling the final year of his rookie contract and would become an unrestricted free agent if he cleared the waivers.

For the first time under head coach Sean McVay, Los Angeles has lost in four straight games. The move suggests younger players will have more opportunities to play late for the defending Super Bowl champions.

Both of these layoffs have salary cap implications, as with every decision. It won’t have much of an impact on the Rams’ financial situation as they are so far into the season.

By firing Darrell Henderson, the Rams will save the remaining unsecured portion of his contract, or $412,460, according to Spotrac.

Darrell Henderson’s NFL Stats

Darrell Henderson’s dismissal is unexpected, given that he was a significant contributor to the band’s horrendous rushing offense.

Transactions with the LA Rams:
• Licensed (by club) TE Kendall Blanton Training Squad
• Forfeited, no recall RB Darrell Henderson, LB Justin Hollins

LA Rams trades:• Cancellation (by club) of TE practice squad Kendall Blanton• Waiver, no recall RB Darrell Henderson, LB Justin Hollins

Henderson, 25, lost his spot in the team’s backfield, resulting in his departure. He played just 6% of offensive snaps in the Rams’ loss to the New Orleans Saints, but had two touches for a total of nine yards.

Instead, Cam Akers and Kyren Williams received most plays out of the backfield. Williams received eight touches for 44 yards, while Akers led the team with 14 carries for 61 yards.

The Rams’ rushing offense currently ranks 31st in the league, bumping them from last place after amassing a season-high 148 yards against the Saints. In 10 games, the personnel of the offensive unit has been changed 10 times.

The Rams selected Henderson in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. In four years with the team, he rushed for 1,742 yards and 13 touchdowns. Darrell Henderson has been a big part of the backfield for Los Angeles whenever healthy throughout his career, starting 28 games, including seven this year.
