Japan provided the shock on matchday four of the 2022 World Cup, beating Germany 2-1 in the Group E opener.

Ilkay Gundogan had put the Germans ahead in the first half before goals from Japanese substitutes Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano turned the tables.

The shock result follows Saudi Arabia’s 2-1 victory over Argentina on Tuesday.

In the other Group E game, Spain went wild against Costa Rica, winning 7-0 and establishing themselves as one of the tournament favourites.

Elsewhere, Morocco and Croatia drew 0-0 in Group F, while Belgium beat Canada 1-0.
