Voting in the referendum on the new constitution in Kazakhstan has ended

The referendum on the new constitution was voted on Sunday, March 15 in Kazakhstan. Sites close at 20:00 local time.

According to preliminary data, the number of voters who received votes reached 9,126,850 citizens, meaning that the participation rate reached 73.24 percent of the total number of voters. This is the highest participation rate since the 2019 presidential elections, when 77.5 percent of citizens went to the polls.

This means that the referendum has already taken place – for this it was necessary for more than half of the electorate to vote. The results of the exit polls are expected to appear after midnight, and the final data on the participation rate will be known after the closure of all polling stations outside the country. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev proposed reforming parliament and turning it into a unicameral body. He pointed out that the issue of establishing a unicameral parliament should be resolved through a referendum with appropriate amendments to the constitution. According to him, such a vote could take place in 2027.

Earlier, Tokayev called out the actions of former Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, which predetermined the crisis in the country.
