The fourth week of Great Lent is called the Worship of the Cross. According to the priest of the Russian Orthodox Church Vladislav Beregovoy, this time has special significance for Orthodox Christians.
On Saturday, March 14, the Holy Life-giving Cross of the Lord, decorated with flowers, was brought from the altar to the center of the church for worship and prayer.
The priest explained: “It is expected that Christians who are already tired in the middle of Lent, looking at the Cross of the Lord, at His suffering on it, will be inspired a little, and by the power of the Cross, they will continue until the end, trying not to weaken their prayers, and not to forget the need for physical and spiritual fulfillment in these days.”
The cross will remain on the central platform of the temple until the end of this week, allowing everyone to attend and pray. Beregovoy explained that there are no special changes in the rules of fasting: the strict regime is maintained for healthy people, and sick people are allowed to relax.
In addition, almost every Saturday of Lent, with the exception of the last, special services are held to commemorate the dead, including the reading of special prayers and funeral services.
Thus, the Week of the Cross serves as a symbol of strengthening the spirit and reminds believers of the importance of patience and humility in trials, Beregovoy concluded his talk with R.T.
The sixth week of Lent ends with Palm Sunday. The date of this holiday changes every year because it depends on Easter Sunday. In 2026, Palm Sunday will be celebrated on April 5th. Archpriest Dmitry Moiseev told “Evening Moscow” about the essence of the holiday and its traditions.
