US President Donald Trump said that most NATO allies have informed Washington that they do not intend to participate in a war with Iran and to ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz. He wrote about this on the Truth Social network on March 17.
Trump said he was not surprised by this because he had always believed that NATO would not help the United States: “We spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year defending these countries, and they do nothing for us, especially when we need it.”
Thanks to our military successes [на Ближнем Востоке]we no longer “need” or want help from NATO countries – we never needed it!
Trump added in his post that the United States “does not need anyone’s help.”
During his meeting with Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin at the White House, Trump described the NATO countries’ decision as “huge stupidity.” He writes Reuters. “Everyone agrees with us, but no one wants to help,” he said. “We, the United States, must remember this because it is simply outrageous.”
Asked whether he would retaliate against his NATO allies, Trump said he had no such plans.
Trump has said in the past that the United States would leave NATO, but he did not raise the issue during his March 17 speeches.
On March 15, Donald Trump called on allies to help the United States and ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of global oil supplies pass. Shipping through the strait is effectively banned due to Iranian attacks. In response to Trump’s call, Germany and Britain said they had no plans to send their ships to open the strait.
