Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the President of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, has finished his work in the republic and is moving to another job, TASS reported on April 30.
“The current president of the republic, Sergei Alimovich-Melikov, his term ends in September. He has done a lot. We are grateful to him for that. But he is moving on to another job, and life goes on,” Putin said at a meeting with representatives of Dagestan.
Speaker of the People’s Assembly of Dagestan Zaur Aleksandrov suggested that Putin nominate Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Dagestan Fyodor Shikin for the post of President of the Republic.
Putin supported Shchukin’s candidacy for the position of President of Dagestan, and Magomed Ramazanov’s nomination for the position of Prime Minister of the Republic.
49-year-old Shikin – local From the Nizhny Novgorod region, he presided over the Supreme Court of Dagestan in February 2024.
Sergei Melikov has led Dagestan since October 2020. Earlier in April, commenting on rumors of his resignation, Melikov called himself a “soldier of Supreme Leader” Vladimir Putin and indicated that he would be where he ordered him to be.
Putin announced the resignation of Sergei Melikov amid the floods that Dagestan witnessed in the spring. As a result of the floods that the Republic witnessed in early April, homes in cities and villages were flooded, water and electricity supplies were cut off, avalanches and mudslides occurred in the mountains, and six people died.
