US President Donald Trump said that the United States will raise import duties on cars and trucks from the European Union to 25%.
According to him, the increase will occur next week – from May 4 to 10. Trump explained this decision by saying that the European Union, in his opinion, does not adhere to the terms of the trade deal previously concluded with the United States. He did not specify exactly what conditions the European Union does not adhere to.
Trump added that the new tariffs will not apply to European cars or trucks if they are made in the United States.
After a series of trade wars, the United States and the European Union entered into a trade agreement in 2025. This implied that US tariffs on European car exports would be set at 15%.
The US Supreme Court opposed the tariffs imposed by Trump at the beginning of his second presidential term. The court found that the president exceeded his powers.
