Krasnogvardeisky District Court in St. Petersburg has banned the films “Love, Simon,” “Kill Your Darlings” and “Call Me by Your Name” in Russia.
The court ruled that these films contain “destructive ideology,” and in themselves “stimulate interest in non-traditional sexual relations” and aim to “change negative attitudes toward them.” [„нетрадиционным сексуальным отношениям“] Positive through the imposition of information.”
The film Call Me by Your Name directed by Luca Guadagnino was released in 2017. Timothée Chalamet played one of the main roles in it. In 2018, the film won an Academy Award in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. The film is based on the novel by Andre Aciman – and tells the story of 17-year-old Elio, who falls in love with helping his father, a young American scientist.
Kill Your Darlings was directed by John Krokidas and released in 2013. It tells the story of the early lives of members of the Beat Generation, including Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and Jack Kerouac.
“Love, Simon”, directed by Greg Berlanti, was released in 2018. It is based on the novel by Becky Albertalli and revolves around an American high school student who hides his homosexuality.
