Collector Sergei Chubraev has discovered a recording of an almost unknown song by Kino group leader Viktor Tsoi, “Children of the Minutes,” which the musician wrote in 1988. The tape, which was recorded on June 24, 1988 in Leningrad, has been preserved by Sarah Okkerin, the daughter of the former Consul General of Sweden, for many years. This came in Chupriev’s interview with “The Dog”, Released June 21 on the occasion of Tsoi’s birthday, and the 17-minute documentary “Hello” released by Soyuz Music. The same song is heard in the latter part of the film.

Chubriev said that he discovered the words of the song “Children of Minutes” in the archive of Zvoki Mo band player Alexander Lipnitsky, who died in 2021. Chubriev said: “Viktor Tsoi sang it only for close friends, and he forbade recording it on a tape recorder, and said that he was not ready to perform it in public.” According to him, it was initially believed that only the lyrics of the song had been preserved – Tsoi wrote the words at Lipnitsky’s request.
Lipnitsky himself said in his film about Kino, released in 2008, that he heard the song “Children of Minutes” for the first time in 1988, when Tsoi performed it in Moscow. When I asked him if it would be included on Kino’s new album, he said no: “No way.” “It would offend a lot of people,” Lipnitsky said.
Chupriev said that he began looking for a recording of the song from foreigners who came to Leningrad in the 1980s. “Very quickly, he called Sarah Okkeren, the daughter of the Swedish Consul General in Leningrad. Okerren recorded at a concert hosted by Kino group member musician Georgi Guryanov. “Vitya sang his favorite songs to us several times, like ‘When Your Girlfriend Is Sick’ and ‘Brotherly Love,’” Okirin said. “And suddenly he decided to sing us a new song.” He was a bit shy, not sure, but he actually felt like singing it. I had a Walkman and a player, and I recorded it.
In the recording, Cui can be heard telling his friends that the song may have lost its relevance, and notes that the text contains many quotes from other musicians’ songs: “There are a lot of quotes. It’s hard to understand because it’s like arguing with other groups. Because there are a lot of their lines.” According to Chupriev, the song contains “a large number of quotes and parodies” of other groups: “Alice”, “TV” and “Ado”.
The cassette also contains other songs that no one has ever heard on audio, including “A Pack of Cigarettes” and “Love Is Not a Joke,” Sergei Chupriev said. “I hope we will also publish it online in the future,” the collector added.
After Tsoi’s death, many musicians sang the song “Children of the Minutes”. So, on June 20, 1992, one of the founders of Kino, Alexei Repin and the Atas group, performed a concert dedicated to Tsoi’s memory in Luzhniki.
In 2010, Vyacheslav Butusov’s group “U-Piter” performed a cover of the song; It was released in the film “Igla Remix” directed by Rashid Najmanov – a sequel to the film “Needle” in which Tsoi starred in 1988.
