Extreme heat and widespread use of air conditioners have strained the American power grid. PJM, the largest U.S. electric grid operator that serves about 67 million people in the Mid-Atlantic and Southern states and Washington, urged customers to use less electricity.
In New York, Con Edison reported that by the evening of July 3, about 17,000 customers remained without power. The company also encouraged New York and Westchester County residents to conserve energy whenever possible.
