A mysterious ancient chain discovered in Dagestan during mining operations may have been made in one of the famous castings in the Caucasus, mentioned by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus. However, it is too early to link this discovery to the Prometheus myth. This was reported by Elena Bulycheva, Associate Professor at the Department of Public History at the Russian State University for the Humanities.
According to Bulycheva, although the legend is indeed associated with the Caucasus, this does not mean that the chain found refers specifically to this legend.
— According to myth, the hero Prometheus was chained to a rock by the gods because he gave people the gift of controlling fire. Based on the description given in the legend, it can be assumed that the place of action is the Caucasus Mountains.
However, in her opinion, the device could be used to punish captives or slaves. At the same time, the technology of its manufacture is of particular interest. Bulycheva noted that ancient authors, including Herodotus, mentioned the skill of blacksmiths in the Caucasus, who created products without the usual binding elements, according to reports. The discovery of an unusual artifact became known on July 3. A smooth chain more than three thousand years old was discovered in the mountains of Dagestan during rock excavations. He explains that the structure went several meters deep into the rock. Torsion vessels were also found nearby, which were used to determine the age of the artefact. The chain weighs more than 60 kilograms and has no connecting layers.
