Elena Rybalko, a member of the KVN team “Burnt by the Sun”, died in Sochi on May 1. Information about her death was confirmed by the artist’s husband and the International KVN Federation. She was 53 years old. Rybalko was one of the most prominent members of the KVN team “Burnt by the Sun” – she performed with Mikhail Galustyan and Alexander Revva in the KVN Major League in the late 90s – early 2000s. author Telegram channel dedicated to culture Sofia Vorobyova talks about it.
Burnt by the Sun, champions of the KVN Major League in 2003, had a lot going for them Featured Heroes, as they are called, follow the classification of roles established in the European theatrical tradition since the seventeenth century. Although KVN is very far from classical theatre, the Sochi team was intuitively divided into roles that strictly conformed to this tradition. The most prominent participants can easily be assigned to their own roles: Mikhail Galustyan is a simpleton or a servant, and Alexander Revva is a lover of heroes or a king. Obviously, the place was occupied by Elena Rybalko, or simply Lena, as she was called on stage and throughout the country – a petite blonde with a bright appearance.
Many jokes of the team, which became the most successful and brightest at the beginning of the 2000s, today will cause a feeling of embarrassment. Perhaps precisely because the authors of the famous sketches – perhaps not out of malice, but again intuitively – followed a simple method, making jokes about the appearance of their main stars. Misha is small, big-nosed, hairy (it is impossible to list the number of miniatures that were simply built on his organic material – from “Gadya Khrenova” to Grandma Siranush). The large facial features of Alexander Revva forced him to play the role of grandmothers or womanizers (the male image won – today we are dealing with such a popular culture phenomenon as Arthur Pirozhkov).
Lena got it in a special way.
A quick search for Burnt by the Sun drawings with Lena in all cases turns up skits and jokes about what she looks like. In the mini-picture “Malchish-Kibalchish”, where the white leader (Revva) tortures Kibalchish (Galustyan), Lena acts as the leader’s sister – at first the torturers want to take her by the chest so that Malchish splits, but then they look at her and refuse. “You’re lying, you won’t accept!” – says Lina. Revva answers: “I’m lying, I won’t accept it.”
In a skit where each team member played an alien (you may well remember that from Swabroid Punch), Lena was carried on stage in a baby sling strapped to an older teammate’s back. Her heroine’s name was Two-Faced Polis.
In the mini-adventure show “Fort Boyard,” Lena is sent to audition “as a stronger, more resilient member of the team” — that description alone made the audience laugh. As the story progresses, Lena kills a lion, finds a key under an elephant, and eventually meets a “little spider with a hamster face.” When this happened, Revva said: “Hurray, mission completed, Lena found a mirror!”
Finally, perhaps the most famous figure with Lena’s participation is “Department of Nuclear Physics of the Institute of Resort Business and Tourism” – It was a poetic drawing in which two little scientists (Lena, 1 meter 47 cm tall, and Galustyan, 1 meter 63 cm tall) are thinking about love. According to the plot, Lena teased Misha, expecting reciprocity from him. He evaded it all the time – he joked that Shakespeare based Yorick on him, and Lenin’s character parameters – 90-60-90 – are written in millimeters. The poetic scene ended with the following phrase: “In Russia there are only two problems – Meshnia Galustyan and Lena.”
In 2016, when KVN turned 55 years old, Burnt by the Sun participated with other bright teams in a festive skit. By then, the program had already become so bronzed that, instead of cutesy student skits staged in scattered places (in the “Department”, for example, only one chair was shared), the show now had prestige and gloss. Jokes emerged about the “successor” — that is, of course, Maslyakov Jr., who was sitting in the front row at the concert, close to Vladimir Putin.
At that concert, Mikhail Galustyan performed a parody of Ramzan Kadyrov – the President of the Chechen Republic maleHe personally helped the comedian prepare for this work. Lena had two jokes at that party, a modified version of the song “Cuckoo”: “How many pensions have not yet been received? Tell Kudrin, sing!”, as well as the role of “Old Catwoman” in a sketch about superheroes.
In the same 2016, Galustyan already had significant media weight – after “Our Russia” he continued to star in TNT comedy projects, for example, in the series “The Bearded Man”. Alexander Revva has been pursuing his musical career under the guise of Arthur Pirozhkov for several years. Elena Rybalko continued to live in Sochi, where she raised three children and taught beginners to play KVN.
A year after the launch of the anniversary on Channel One, the local Sochi project invited Lena to a makeover show – the “Metamorphosis” program.
Judging by the number of times the names of hotels, restaurants, clinics and beauty salons are pronounced, which the heroine must visit within 12 days of her transformation, the purpose of this project was primarily of an advertising nature. However, the episode begins with Rybalko on a high note – Lena said she didn’t watch the “55 Years of KVN” concert right away, because she simply couldn’t see herself: “My face is terrible. I haven’t been able to watch this recording for four days.”
The presenter, before the “transformation” begins, purposefully he asked“How did you go from being tired of the sun to being tired of yourself?” Lina answered: “I stopped taking care of myself, the daily routine.” During the “transformation”, Lena was injected with a filler into her nasolabial folds, had her hair extended, had her teeth whitened, and was told to wear bright scarves with bizarre prints on her head to “stay radiant.” Judging by the looks, Rybalko was satisfied with the transformation.
Lena did not become a big TV star, although it is difficult to imagine “Burnt by the Sun” without her. She was born and studied in Adler: in elementary school she played piano, chess and volleyball, in middle school she built model airplanes at the Young Pilots Club, in high school she completed cutting and sewing courses, and later she worked as a seamstress in a souvenir factory. In technical school I studied as an accountant, then at Sochi State University to become an economist. There she played the institute’s KVN, so actively that she eventually became a cultural worker at the university. “Burnt by the Sun”, which at that time was forming a cast, was really lacking in female characters – and Lena had just joined the team.
On May 1, 2026, Elena Rybalko died – they write that she was crossing the road in the wrong place in Adler, she was hit by a Toyota car, and she died instantly. The death was confirmed by her husband. She was 53 years old.
Condolences Express KVN International Movement: “Elena’s death is an irreplaceable loss for everyone who knew this wonderful girl. In this difficult hour, we share the pain of the family and everyone who was lucky enough to know Elena.” Mikhail Galustyan said in a comment to TASS: “It is a pity that Lenochka left. Blessed memory to her. Woe to the children, my condolences. We remember her as a very cheerful, active and cheerful girl. I did some of the best numbers in KVN with her.”
Rybalko was, of course, not the first naivete in the history of Russian and Soviet popular culture. For example, actress Yanina Zemo, who played Cinderella in the famous Soviet film, had the same height – 1 m 48. In films, she also played naive boys or princesses, often entertaining the audience: she worked for many years in the circus, was an equestrian, gymnast and ballerina. For a second of this kind of Cinderella, unfortunately, there was no place in modern popular culture – we don’t know why. But we can assume that not only the daily routine, but also comedy, played a role.
