Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan on Thursday, June 11, did not rule out the possibility of permanently depriving citizens of the republic living abroad of voting rights.
– It is clear that there is a public demand to establish the residency qualification. The country’s Prime Minister emphasized: “I think we must give some kind of reaction to this request.”
He stated this at a press conference in response to a similar question from a journalist TASS.
Earlier, Armenian Member of Parliament Gigam Manukyan, who represents the opposition “Armenia” faction, said that the country’s authorities prevented the exit of citizens assigned to military service who came to the republic from abroad for the period of parliamentary elections. The parliamentarian described the decision as an “immoral, unacceptable and illegal measure.”
On June 7, the first parliamentary elections were held in Armenia after the loss of Nagorno-Karabakh. The Civil Contract Party, led by Nikol Pashinyan, received 49.8 percent of the votes. This result is sufficient to obtain a parliamentary majority that allows an individual to form the government.
