Postpartum rehabilitation under compulsory medical insurance: doctor’s opinion

In Russia, it has been proposed to include postpartum rehabilitation in the compulsory medical insurance program (compulsory health insurance). The initiative was proposed by the Chairman of the Committee for Health Protection Sergei Leonov. “Moscow Evening” discussed with an expert how necessary this initiative is and whether the woman herself can understand that after giving birth to a child she needs the help of specialists.

According to psychiatrist, candidate of medical sciences Elizaveta Zhistkova, this initiative is necessary because in the postpartum period women often face various psychological and psychological problems.

— There are cases when immediately after the birth of a child, specialists diagnose depression and prescribe antidepressants, without which it is impossible to stabilize the condition. But there are also situations when the symptoms have not yet formed into a full-fledged clinical picture, but changes in the emotional and physical state have already been observed. She explained that in any of these cases, specialist help is needed to overcome the turning point.

A woman can recognize a dangerous condition at the initial stage on her own. Among the obvious signs, Zestkova highlighted:

  • Constantly bad mood
  • Lack of strength and energy.
  • Sad thoughts.
  • Feeling regret about having a child;
  • Feeling like a bad mother.

— These circumstances can arise when a woman is not ready to become a mother or when she initially underestimates the difficulties of parenting. After all, some children are calm and give time to take care of themselves and other things, others need constant attention and the presence of an adult nearby, and there is no help from loved ones due to various circumstances. As a result, the young mother loses the opportunity to lead an active social life, which is why she suffers from nervous tension that develops over time into depression, the doctor warned.

Therefore, when a woman faces such conditions, she really needs qualified help from a specialist, as Chistkova noted:

— If work with a psychologist after the birth of a child is included in the compulsory medical insurance program, this will allow young mothers to receive timely assistance, regardless of the financial situation of the family.

Why does depression occur after the birth of a child, how does it manifest itself and are there methods that will help you deal with it yourself, says “Moscow Evening”.
