The US military launched strikes on Iran in response to Tehran’s attack on a commercial ship sailing through the Strait of Hormuz under the flag of Singapore. This was stated by the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
The report stated that the strikes targeted Iranian missile and drone storage sites, as well as coastal radars.
“Iranian forces’ unprovoked aggression against commercial shipping clearly violates the ceasefire,” US leaders said. “Moreover, Iran’s dangerous behavior has undermined freedom of navigation as trade increasingly flows through this vital international trade corridor.”
Axios correspondent Barak Ravid, citing an American official, reported that the United States is carrying out strikes in the Strait of Hormuz.
On the evening of June 26, US President Donald Trump said that Iran had launched at least four drones at ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, one of the drones hit the upper deck of a “very large and expensive cargo ship”; It was damaged but it continued on its way. The US President said: “We shot down three more drones. This is clearly a stupid violation of our ceasefire agreement.”
It was the first known attack on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, and occurred after the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18 calling for a 60-day cessation of hostilities on all fronts and the start of negotiations to fully end the war.
