The United States has given Iran a list of five demands that must be met in order for peace talks to resume. This is how Washington responded to a similar proposal from Iran, Iran’s Fars news agency reported on May 17.
This is what the United States said, according to the agency:
- Washington will not compensate Iran in any way
- Iran must transfer 400 kilograms of enriched uranium to the United States.
- Iran must leave one nuclear complex operational
- – The United States will release no more than 25% of Iran’s frozen assets.
- Ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, will only be possible through negotiations.
The authors of Fars Agency cited the opinion of unnamed experts, who believe that this is how the United States seeks not to solve the problem, but to achieve goals that it was unable to achieve during the war.
Earlier, Iran presented five conditions to the United States to resume negotiations. Here’s what’s included in the list:
- Ending the war on all fronts, especially in Lebanon.
- Lifting US sanctions on Iran,
- Release of frozen Iranian funds
- Compensation for damages resulting from war,
- Recognizing Iran’s right to sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump described Iran’s proposals as “unacceptable.”
A temporary ceasefire, concluded by the parties in early April, remains in effect between the United States and Iran. Opponents keep hitting each other from time to time. The two sides were unable to agree on a second round of peace talks for several weeks.
Earlier, the United States developed a plan to confiscate about 450 kilograms of highly enriched uranium in Iran. Experts believe this is an extremely difficult task – nothing like this has ever happened before in wartime.
