The previous day, Axios reported that Tehran had conveyed to Washington a new ceasefire proposal, which Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi presented to Pakistani mediators over the weekend of April 25-26. According to Reuters, the first stage of the Iranian plan includes a ceasefire and providing guarantees of non-aggression in the future, followed by lifting the US naval blockade and determining the status of the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran wants to remain under its control, and only then moving on to discussing other issues, including the Iranian nuclear program.
Abbas Araghchi traveled to St. Petersburg on April 27 to meet with Vladimir Putin. During the open part of the talks, Putin said that Russia would “do everything” to ensure peace in the Middle East as quickly as possible. In turn, Araqchi said that relations with Russia for Iran are a “strategic partnership at the highest level.”
