Violinist and conductor Sergei Stadler has died. He became ill on a plane bound for Istanbul

People’s Artist of Russia, violinist, principal conductor and artistic director of the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra Sergei Stadler died on April 20 at the age of 63, Fontanka reported, citing the press service of the St. Petersburg Governor.

According to the publication, the musician became ill on a plane heading from St. Petersburg to Istanbul. For this reason, the plane landed in Bucharest, and the doctors tried to revive the artist, but they were unable to save him.

Sergei Stadler is a master of Russian and world classics. He grew up in a family of musicians in Leningrad, and has been playing the violin since the age of five. In 1995, he became the first player to have the honor of playing Guarneri del Gesu’s “Il Cannone” in open concerts.

He headed the Saint Petersburg Conservatory from 2008 to 2011. He founded and headed the Saint Petersburg Symphony Orchestra in 2013.
