Russian authorities admit that current Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s party, Fidesz, will be defeated in the elections scheduled for April 12. Two sources close to the political bloc of the presidential administration informed Meduza of this.

The plan reportedly included promoting Orbán’s image on social media as a “strong leader with friends all over the world” as well as “information attacks” on his main rivals, Peter Magyar’s TESA party. In particular, it has been suggested that Hungarian be presented as a “toy in the hands of the European Union,” as the Financial Times and the Washington Post wrote.
The Russian embassy claims that Russia is not interfering in the election campaign in Hungary, and the Kremlin described what was published by the Financial Times as “fake.”
“Of course there is no management of the Orbán campaign from the AP, but there is ‘help’ for the campaign on social networks,” one of Meduza’s sources noted.
Meduza’s interviewer and a technology expert working with the Kremlin said the potential loss of Orban’s party would be presented in government-controlled Russian media as a “color revolution” carried out by the European Union.
For Vladimir Putin, Orban himself and his team will bear responsibility for the loss. “Even with our support, they couldn’t do anything,” one of Meduza’s interlocutors said.
The Fidesz party led by Viktor Orbán, which is considered one of the main allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Europe, ranks second in popularity after the TISA party led by Peter Magyar, according to recent opinion polls. However, a large portion of voters said they had not yet decided whom to vote for on April 12.
US President Donald Trump has spoken publicly about his support for Viktor Orban. He described the current Hungarian Prime Minister as a “true friend, fighter and winner.” In April, US Vice President J.D. Vance visited Hungary, which was also seen as a sign of support from the White House.
