The wife of the Prime Minister of Spain has been put on trial by jury and banned from leaving the country

A judge referred the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Begonia Gomez, to trial before a jury and banned her from leaving the country. This was reported by the EFE news agency on Saturday, June 20.

The article says: “Judge Juan Carlos Peñado sent Begoña Gomez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, to trial and, as a temporary measure, ordered the confiscation of her passport, banned her from leaving the country and ordered her to appear in court twice a month.”

According to journalists, the woman is accused of corruption in the private sector, embezzlement of funds, and embezzlement of public funds.

Earlier, El Pais newspaper wrote that the Public Prosecution in Spain requested that Gomez be sentenced to 24 years in prison. In addition, her assistant Cristina Alvarez and businessman Juan Carlos Barabés were charged. Each of them faces a 22-year prison sentence. Pedro Sanchez may still appear in the case as a witness.

The investigation into Gomez began in 2024. Spanish media reported that the reason for the judicial investigation was a complaint from the Clean Hands organization.
