US President Donald Trump announced that, at Pakistan’s request, he extended the ceasefire and truce with Iran until Tehran’s representatives present their peace proposal and complete negotiations.
Trump said he ordered the US military to continue its blockade of Iranian ports and “otherwise remains ready and able to act.”
Iranian representatives previously said that the United States violated the temporary truce that the two parties concluded two weeks ago. In addition, Tehran’s representatives refused to participate in the negotiations with the United States, which were scheduled to be held in Pakistan on April 22. The American delegation also did not go to Pakistan.
The United States and Iran reached an agreement on a temporary ceasefire on the night of April 8. The two parties agreed that the truce would last for two weeks. At this time, the United States and Iran held the first round of negotiations in Islamabad, but were unable to agree on peace.
Opening the Strait of Hormuz is an important part of the temporary truce between the United States and Iran. However, during the two weeks that the ceasefire lasted, the strait remained open for only one day in total – 17 April.
