On an empty stomach, it is recommended to avoid sugary grains, citrus fruits, and sour fruits, and one should not drink coffee. Acting Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the State Education University, biologist Irina Layalina, warned about this.
Eating some foods on an empty stomach can cause high blood sugar, irritation of the mucous membrane, or secretion of excess acid. The expert pointed out that citrus and sour fruits (lemon, grapefruit, and oranges) are blacklisted, because acids can irritate the stomach mucosa, causing heartburn, gastritis, or exacerbation of ulcers.
Also according to her, coffee, even without milk, should not be consumed on an empty stomach, because caffeine stimulates the production of hydrochloric acid. If there is no food in the stomach, this acid begins to affect its walls. This can ultimately lead to damage and discomfort.
Layalina also stressed that foods with a high glycemic index, such as sugary cereals and baked goods, should not be eaten on an empty stomach, because they can cause a “severe insulin spike.” After a rapid rise in blood sugar levels, an equally sharp fall follows, which leads to a strong feeling of hunger and weakness within an hour.
