On Tuesday, May 5, the head of the Just Russia party, Sergei Mironov, criticized the court’s decision in the case of the former head of Mari El, Leonid Markelov, whose imprisonment was replaced with hard labor. In his opinion, such decisions “inspire” thousands of embezzlers and bribe takers.
The politician recalled that just five years ago, Markelov was sentenced to 13 years in prison, and now he is already being released. Mironov described it as a mockery of law and justice.

He called for the abolition of parole for corrupt officials and called on the Duma to support preventive anti-corruption measures, even to the extent of equating grand theft with treason. The Prosecutor General’s Office has already appealed the court’s decision in the Markelov case.
Historian Oleg Sokolov, previously convicted of murdering a graduate student in St. Petersburg, filed a petition to replace his remaining sentence in a colony with forced labor.
