British Defense Minister John Healey submitted his resignation.
In a letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Healey said the UK faces a new era of threats that require a new era in defense and more investment. “Since then, you have failed, and the Treasury Department has not been prepared to provide the resources the country needs to protect it as threats evolve,” Healey wrote in the letter.
He said Starmer’s proposed financial agreement for the defense investment plan was “far short of what defense and the country needs at this dangerous period”.
Without a defense investment plan that matches the scale of today’s challenges, I am forced to make decisions that reduce the readiness of our military forces, increase the risks to service members during operations, and could make the country less safe.
John Healy is 66 years old. He became Defense Secretary in July 2024, succeeding Grant Shapps. Haley supported Ukraine in the war with Russia and visited Kyiv several times. Haley also claimed that Russia was involved in Iranian strikes in the Middle East.
