Politico newspaper reported, citing sources, that at the G7 summit, Donald Trump called on the leaders of the G7 countries to help the United States clear mines in the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for support from Ukraine.
In a public meeting with reporters, Trump said: “I don’t think we’re going to need a lot of help.” However, behind closed doors, according to the source, the US President took a “more flexible stance,” seeking from the G7 countries political and practical support for the agreement with Iran.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz indicated that the discussions that took place at the summit, including with Trump’s participation, “sow a measure of optimism.” Politico wrote that this optimism about the White House is shared by other leaders from the G7 countries.
The G7 summit began in Evian, France, on June 16. Zelensky has already met with Trump and Macron; Trump himself described this meeting as good and promised that he would continue to speak with the Ukrainian president. A joint G7 statement issued after the first day said G7 leaders would increase arms supplies to Ukraine and increase pressure on Russia’s war economy. The leaders of the G7 countries also supported the agreement to open the Strait of Hormuz concluded between Iran and the United States. It is expected to be signed on June 19.
