Historian Tamara Edelman was sentenced in absentia to eight years in prison – Meduza

The Moscow City Court sentenced historian Tamara Edelman in absentia to eight years in prison on charges of Nazi rehabilitation (Article 354.1 of the Criminal Code) and publishing “false information” about the army (paragraph “e” of Part 2 of Article 207.3 of the Criminal Code). The media reported this.

The accusation of Nazi rehabilitation is linked to the video “Talk about important things: Stolen Victory Day”, which was published on the Historian’s channel in May 2024. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, Edelman expressed in the video “negative information about the actions of the Soviet Union during World War II, the days of military glory and memorable dates in Russia related to the defense of the Fatherland, as well as about veterans of the Great Patriotic War.”

In particular, according to the prosecution, she talked about a conspiracy between the Soviet Union and Germany, and also described the veterans as dependent people who had forgotten the events and were telling lies.

The “fake news” case was opened against Edelman over a post about a Russian missile attack on Ukhmatdet Children’s Hospital in Kiev.

Tamara Edelman is a historian and educator. Before leaving Russia, she taught history and social studies at Moscow School No. 67 YouTube channel 1.8 million subscribed users. In September 2022, the Russian Ministry of Justice declared Edelman a “foreign agent.”
