The American hockey club, the Washington Capitals, has extended the contract with the team’s captain, Russian striker Alexander Ovechkin, for another season.
“I’m back! Thank you all for giving my family time to make this decision,” the 40-year-old Washington Capitals forward said.
Under the contract, Ovechkin will receive a salary of $1 million, a 10-game appearance bonus of $4.75 million, and a signing bonus of $3.25 million. The average annual salary under the contract will be $4.25 million.
Ovechkin became a free agent on July 1. His contract with Washington expired. The hockey player said that he will make a decision about his future career in the summer.
Alexander Ovechkin is the all-time NHL regular-season scoring leader in the entire history of the league, with 929 goals to his name. The Russian hockey player rose to first place on the list of snipers in April 2025, surpassing Wayne Gretzky, who scored 894 goals. Gretzky’s record has stood for more than 25 years.
