In Kyiv on June 4, the monument to Mikhail Bulgakov was dismantled. The statue of Nikolai Rabai is located near the Writer’s Museum on Andreevsky Spousk.
The Kyiv City Council took the decision to remove the monument in December 2025. In total, they decided to remove 15 monuments and plaques to cultural figures, including monuments to Mikhail Bulgakov and Anna Akhmatova, as well as to composer Mikhail Glinka.
“The basis for the dismantling was the professional conclusion of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory that the objects dedicated to the Russian writer Mikhail Bulgakov belong to the symbolism of Russian imperial politics,” the Kyiv city government administration said.
According to the conclusion, the character of Mikhail Bulgakov is included in the list of people used by Russian propaganda to glorify Russian imperial policies, and objects associated with them are subject to removal from public space.
The decision to remove the monument to Bulgakov, who was born and lived in Kiev, sparked mixed reactions in the cultural community. books “Sobelny.” Some participants in the discussion believed it was necessary to remove the “imperial signs”, while others said that Bulgakov was “part of Kiev’s cultural symbol”.
